Getting to the Tepozteco: the essentials
The Tepozteco is a small pyramid dedicated to Tepoztécatl, god of pulque, perched on a cliff edge about 300 m above Tepoztlán, inside El Tepozteco National Park. The trail is a steep stone path with steps, about 2 km long.

Step 2: from the bus station to the trail
The bus station is on the southern edge of town, about 1 km from the main square. Walk through the centre to the end of Avenida del Tepozteco, where the trail starts, about 2 km in total.
Step 3: the climb
- Allow 1–1½ hours up on a steep path with steps and, near the top, metal ladders. Plan 3–4 hours for the round trip and the site.
- The archaeological site is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, last entry 3:00 PM; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Entry: in 2026 INAH listed about MXN 105 for Mexicans and residents and about MXN 210 for foreign visitors; sources differ, so bring cash.
- No pets, drones, alcohol or smoking on the trail.

Tips for the Tepozteco
- Go early on a weekday. Weekends are crowded and the steps get busy.
- Fire season: from March to May fires can close the site and trails, as in 2025. Check before you travel.
- Rainy season: June to September brings afternoon rain and slippery rock. October to February is the most pleasant time.
- Wildlife: coatis at the top are used to stealing food. Don't feed them.
- Gear: shoes with grip, 1.5 litres of water and a sun hat.
After the hike, explore Tepoztlán's weekend market and its 16th-century Dominican convent.
