Budget getaways from Cancún: the essentials

Day tours from the hotel zone can cost more than US$100 per person. An ADO bus gets you to the same towns, beaches and cenotes for a fraction of that, on your own schedule. Most buses leave from the Cancún downtown ADO terminal (Avenida Tulum and Uxmal), a short local-bus ride from the hotel zone. Some also stop at the airport.

Sample fares from Cancún

  • Playa del Carmen: from US$4, about 45 minutes–1h 50min, about 70 buses a day.
  • Tulum: from US$13.50, about 2h 30min–3h 20min, 19 buses a day.
  • Valladolid: from US$23, about 2h 25min, 6 buses a day.
  • Chiquilá, for the Holbox ferry: from US$24, about 2h 35min, 5 buses a day.
  • Bacalar: from US$35, about 5h 20min–5h 45min, 16 buses a day.
  • Mérida: from US$42, about 4h 10min–5h 10min, over 40 buses a day.

Mind the time zone

Yucatán state (Mérida, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá) is one hour behind Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar). Bus times are always local, so a trip between the two states looks one hour longer or shorter on your ticket than it really is.

Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo pay the state Visitax fee (about MXN 285 per person in 2026) once per trip. Pay it only on the official site, visitax.gob.mx.

How to keep your bus fare low

  • Compare departure times. ADO fares change with the date, the hour and how full the bus is. Early-morning, midday and late-night departures are often cheaper than Friday evening or Sunday afternoon.
  • Book ahead for holidays. Christmas, Easter week (Semana Santa) and long weekends sell out and cost more. Buying online a few days early usually gets you a better fare and the seat you want.
  • Choose the service class. ADO and OCC buses are the standard options; ADO GL and Platino add more legroom at a higher price. For short trips, the standard bus is the budget choice.
  • Let the night bus be your hotel. On longer routes, an overnight bus saves you a night of accommodation.
  • Travel light. Your ticket includes checked luggage within ADO's limits, so there is no bag fee.

Bus times, travel times and fares on this page come from the ADO booking flow for Saturday, December 5, 2026, and can change. Fares vary by date, time and seat availability, so search your own dates for live prices. Entry fees, ferry fares and local transport are set by each site and operator; the figures here are approximate 2026 prices, so confirm them locally.

Taco al pastor at Parque de las Palapas, Cancún

Sample day trip: Valladolid and a cenote for under US$60

  1. 7:30 AM: first ADO bus from Cancún to Valladolid (from about US$23). Remember Valladolid is one hour behind Cancún.
  2. Morning: walk to Cenote Zací (about MXN 60) and swim before the crowds.
  3. Midday: lunch at the municipal market or a family cocina económica, then stroll the Calzada de los Frailes and the main square for free.

More ways to save on the coast

  • Pay in pesos: cash prices in pesos are usually better than paying in dollars.
  • Swim at public beaches and town cenotes instead of buying park tickets.
  • Stay in Playa del Carmen, Valladolid or Bacalar, where rooms usually cost less than in Cancún's hotel zone or Tulum.
