The journey from Cancún to Valladolid
The ride between Cancún and Valladolid crosses the state line from Quintana Roo into Yucatán through flat, unbroken jungle scrub. Most first-class buses take the Highway 180D toll road, which skirts Valladolid and joins the town by an interchange with Highway 295. The free Highway 180 runs alongside through roadside villages such as Leona Vicario, Nuevo Xcán and Chemax, where you will see thatched Maya houses, fruit stalls and plenty of speed bumps.
In Cancún, buses use the downtown ADO terminal on Avenida Tulum. In Valladolid the ADO station is on Calle 39 at Calle 46, a couple of blocks west of the main plaza, so you can walk to most central hotels when you arrive.
When the buses leave
- Morning (5:00–11:59): about 2 a day
- Afternoon (12:00–17:59): about 3 a day
- Evening (18:00–23:59): occasional departures

A typical trip takes around 2h 30min; the fastest services take around 2h 25min. Times and fares come from current ADO timetables for the next 30 days and change by date and service class.

Valladolid is a compact colonial Pueblo Mágico and the best base for cenotes and ruins in eastern Yucatán. Cenote Zací sits in a park inside the town, while X'keken and Samula at Dzitnup and the much-photographed Suytun are a short colectivo or taxi ride away. In town, the Calzada de los Frailes leads to the former Convent of San Bernardino de Siena, and Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá are both close enough for an early-morning visit before the Cancún tour coaches arrive.
Tips for the Cancún–Valladolid bus
Tip 1
Valladolid's ADO station is small; ask your hotel to hold luggage if you plan a day trip before an evening bus.
Tip 2
Colectivos to Chichén Itzá and to the Dzitnup cenotes leave from near the ADO station on Calle 39, so you can connect straight from the bus.
Tip 3
Flying out of Cancún? Buses on this route use the downtown terminal, so change there to an ADO Aeropuerto bus and leave a margin.
Tip 4
Visit Suytun and Chichén Itzá early in the morning; that is when crowds from the coast have not yet arrived.
Other ways to travel
The Tren Maya stops at a station on the outskirts of Valladolid beside Highway 180D, a taxi ride from the centre, and at Cancún Aeropuerto station, not downtown Cancún; colectivos also run on the free road. The ADO bus is usually the more convenient option because it runs centre-to-centre and more often.
