The journey from Tulum to Cancún

From Tulum the bus heads north on Highway 307 through the heart of the Riviera Maya. The road passes the turn-offs for Xel-Há, Akumal, Xpu-Ha and Puerto Aventuras, then the Xcaret park and Playa del Carmen, before continuing through Puerto Morelos to Cancún. Scenery is mostly low jungle broken by resort gates, cenote signs and roadside villages; the sea stays out of sight behind the coastal strip.

Many services call at Playa del Carmen on the way, where the bus can fill up. Depending on the service, you end at the downtown Cancún terminal or at Cancún International Airport, where ADO stops at each passenger terminal. Traffic builds near Cancún, particularly around the morning rush.

When the buses leave

  • Morning (5:00–11:59): about 8 a day
  • Afternoon (12:00–17:59): about 8 a day
  • Evening (18:00–23:59): about 3 a day
  • Night (0:00–4:59): about 1 a day

A typical trip takes around 2h 25min; the fastest services take around 1h 45min. Times and fares come from current ADO timetables for the next 30 days and change by date and service class.

Arriving in Cancún

Northbound travellers from Tulum are mostly catching a flight home from Cancún International Airport at the end of a Riviera Maya trip. Others swap Tulum's jungle-and-beach scene for Cancún's Hotel Zone, the ferry to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez, or onward ADO routes to Holbox, Valladolid and Mérida from the downtown terminal.

Tips for the Tulum–Cancún bus

Tip 1

Board at Tulum Centro, the main ADO terminal on Av. Tulum in town; airport services leave from there. ADO also lists a separate Tulum Zona Arqueológica stop on Highway 307 by the ruins, so check which one your ticket names.

Tip 2

Book the airport bus ahead in high season. Forum travellers note that buses can look empty in Tulum and then sell out at Playa del Carmen.

Tip 3

Not every departure runs direct to the airport. If the times do not suit your flight, you can ride to Playa del Carmen or downtown Cancún and change to an airport service.

Tip 4

For early-morning flights, check the first airport departure before you plan; travel guides suggest a private transfer if no bus gets you there in time.

Other ways to travel

Colectivos do not run straight from Tulum to Cancún; you change vans in Playa del Carmen, which suits daytime trips with light luggage but not flight connections. The Tren Maya reaches the airport from Tulum but runs only a few times a day from a station outside town, so the ADO bus is the more flexible choice from Tulum Centro.
