Tepoztlan is Waiting For You
Quick, comfortable service from Mexico City's South Terminal (known as Taxqueña) in Mexico City to Tepoztlán's bus station — arriving at the edge of this Pueblo Mágico, just a short taxi ride from the cobblestone center and the foot of the Tepozteco mountains. ~1 hour 15 minutes door-to-door.
Hike to an Aztec Pyramid in the Clouds
At the summit of Tepozteco Mountain, a small pyramid built to honor Tepoztēcatl — the Aztec god of pulque — has been watching over this valley since before the Spanish arrived. The steep climb takes 30 minutes to an hour, and the reward is a jaw-dropping panorama of the entire Tepoztlán valley ringed by dramatic copper-toned cliffs. It's one of the most iconic hikes in central Mexico — and it's only in Tepoztlán.
Useful information for your trip
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
One-way tickets cost approximately MXN $200 (around $11 USD). OCC (part of the ADO family) and ADO both operate this route. Prices may vary slightly depending on the departure time and how far in advance you book. Book ahead on the website or the ADO app to secure your seat, especially on weekends when this route is very popular with locals heading out for the day.
How long is the bus from Mexico City to Tepoztlán?
The trip takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from Terminal Taxqueña, depending on traffic. The route heads south through the mountains into the state of Morelos — it's a scenic, easy ride that makes Tepoztlán one of the most accessible getaways from Mexico City.
What time do buses from Mexico City to Tepoztlán leave?
OCC and ADO offer frequent daily departures from Terminal Taxqueña (Terminal del Sur), running from early morning (around 6:00 AM) through to approximately 9:30 PM. On weekends, services are even more frequent to meet demand from Chilangos heading to Tepoztlán for the day. An early departure gets you there in time to hike El Tepozteco before the midday heat.
Which terminal does the bus leave from in Mexico City?
The departure point is Terminal Taxqueña (Terminal del Sur), located on Avenida Taxqueña in southern Mexico City. You can reach it easily by Metro (Taxqueña station, Line 2) or by taxi/ride-hailing app. It's also possible to catch a bus from Mexico City International Airport to Cuernavaca and connect to Tepoztlán from there. Always double-check your ticket for the correct terminal.
Where does the bus arrive in Tepoztlán?
Buses arrive at Tepoztlán's small bus station on the edge of town, near the highway. From there, taxis to the main square (Zócalo) cost around MXN $40–60, or you can walk into the center in about 20 minutes along a marked path. On weekends the town is buzzing and you'll find taxis waiting right at the stop.
Can I cancel or change my ADO bus ticket?
You can cancel your ticket up to 60 minutes before departure at any ADO ticket office. You must present the original ticket and an official ID matching the ticketholder's name. Refunds are issued as Saldo Max credit, not back to your original payment method. Advance-purchase discounted tickets are more restrictive and generally non-refundable. If you don't know your new date, you can request an open ticket for the same route to rebook later.
Is there a flexible ticket option?
ADO's standard full-price tickets allow exchanges up to 60 minutes before departure at any ticket window. Discounted advance-purchase tickets are typically non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
Does the bus make stops along the way?
Most OCC and ADO services from Taxqueña to Tepoztlán run as direct routes with no intermediate stops. Some departures may briefly stop at the Tepoztlán caseta (toll booth area) before reaching the main bus stop closer to town — check your ticket for the exact drop-off point.
How much luggage can I bring?
Each passenger can take up to 25 kg of checked baggage free of charge. Your bags are stored in a locked compartment under the bus, and you receive a claim tag to retrieve them upon arrival. You can also carry one carry-on bag at no additional cost. For a day trip, most travelers just bring a backpack onboard — no need to check anything.
What amenities are on the bus?
For this shorter route, OCC and ADO buses offer comfortable reclining seats, air conditioning, and onboard entertainment. This isn't a long-haul luxury service, but the buses are modern, clean, and well-maintained — more than comfortable for a ride of just over an hour.
Can I book my ticket in English?
Yes! At ADO International we offer an ADO booking experience in many different languages, adapting to the needs of travelers, visitors, and passengers from all over the world. Digital boarding passes are sent by email — no need to print.
Do I need an ID to board?
Yes. Carry a valid government-issued photo ID (passport for international travelers, INE for Mexican citizens) that matches the name on your ticket. While ID checks aren't always enforced on domestic routes, it's required for cancellations, exchanges, and occasionally at boarding.
Is the Mexico City to Tepoztlán bus safe?
ADO and OCC operate modern buses equipped with GPS tracking and professional certified drivers. The route runs on a well-maintained toll highway south of Mexico City into Morelos. Tepoztlán itself is considered very safe for visitors and is one of Mexico's most popular Pueblo Mágico destinations. ADO is consistently rated as one of the safest bus operators in Mexico.
Can I travel with children?
Children under 5 years old travel free if sharing a seat with an accompanying adult. Children over 5 require their own ticket. Unaccompanied minors under 18 are generally not permitted without an authorized adult. The short ride makes this a perfect family day trip — kids do great on a one-hour bus ride, especially with the promise of ice cream at Tepoznieves when you arrive.
