Getting to the Tepozteco: the essentials

The Tepozteco is a small pyramid dedicated to Tepoztécatl, god of pulque, perched on a cliff edge about 300 m above Tepoztlán, inside El Tepozteco National Park. The trail is a steep stone path with steps, about 2 km long.

Step 1: bus from Mexico City to Tepoztlán

  • Mexico City Terminal Sur (Taxqueña, Metro Line 2): 37 buses a day from 6:00 AM, about every 30 minutes, about 1h 20min, from US$12.
  • Back to Mexico City: about 40 buses a day from 5:25 AM into the evening, about 1h 15min.
  • See Mexico City to Tepoztlán.

Step 2: from the bus station to the trail

The bus station is on the southern edge of town, about 1 km from the main square. Walk through the centre to the end of Avenida del Tepozteco, where the trail starts, about 2 km in total.

Step 3: the climb

  • Allow 1–1½ hours up on a steep path with steps and, near the top, metal ladders. Plan 3–4 hours for the round trip and the site.
  • The archaeological site is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, last entry 3:00 PM; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Entry: in 2026 INAH listed about MXN 105 for Mexicans and residents and about MXN 210 for foreign visitors; sources differ, so bring cash.
  • No pets, drones, alcohol or smoking on the trail.

Bus times, travel times and fares on this page come from the ADO booking flow for Wednesday, December 2, 2026, and can change. Search your travel date for live times. Park fees, opening hours and local transport are set by each park, operator and driver; the figures here are approximate 2026 prices, so confirm them locally. Mountain conditions change quickly: check the weather and any park closures before you go.

Tips for the Tepozteco

  • Go early on a weekday. Weekends are crowded and the steps get busy.
  • Fire season: from March to May fires can close the site and trails, as in 2025. Check before you travel.
  • Rainy season: June to September brings afternoon rain and slippery rock. October to February is the most pleasant time.
  • Wildlife: coatis at the top are used to stealing food. Don't feed them.
  • Gear: shoes with grip, 1.5 litres of water and a sun hat.

After the hike, explore Tepoztlán's weekend market and its 16th-century Dominican convent.
