The journey from Mexico City to Xalapa
Buses to Xalapa depart mainly from TAPO, Mexico City's eastern terminal. They follow Highway 150D over the Río Frío pass towards Puebla and then turn northeast onto toll Highway 140D at Amozoc. The road crosses the high, dry plateau of eastern Puebla to Perote, where the broad Cofre de Perote volcano rises to the south and the snowy Pico de Orizaba can often be seen further off.
After Perote the highway passes Las Vigas de Ramírez and begins a long descent from the cold uplands into the green, misty hills of central Veracruz. It then skirts Banderilla and takes the Xalapa bypass to CAXA, the city's central bus station on the east side of town. This high stretch is known for dense fog, especially early in the morning and at night.

Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz state, is a university city nicknamed the Athens of Veracruz. Its best-known sight is the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa, which holds monumental Olmec heads. The city also has the Pinacoteca Diego Rivera, a hillside centre around the cathedral, and Parque Juárez, with views towards Pico de Orizaba and Cofre de Perote. Its mild highland climate and coffee culture draw visitors, and many use Xalapa as a base for the nearby coffee towns of Coatepec and Xico.
Tips for the Mexico City–Xalapa bus
Tip 1
Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket. The road climbs above 2,000 m around Perote, and Xalapa is often damp and drizzly, especially from June to September.
Tip 2
Sit on the right-hand side for the best chance of seeing Cofre de Perote and Pico de Orizaba on clear days.
Tip 3
Fog and roadwork can slow traffic on the Perote stretch, so leave some buffer before onward connections.
Tip 4
From CAXA, take an authorised taxi or a city bus to the centre, which is uphill from the terminal.
Other ways to travel
Xalapa has no regular commercial air service, and flying via Veracruz still requires a road transfer, so the direct bus from TAPO is the most practical public transport option.
