Dance the Danzón in Mexico's Liveliest Zócalo

On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings, couples take to the Zócalo in Veracruz to dance the danzón — a graceful, Cuban-born tradition that arrived at this port in the 1890s and never left. Marimba bands, street performers, and the hum of café life surround you. It's the soul of Veracruz, and you won't find anything like it anywhere else in Mexico.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much is the bus from Mexico City to Veracruz?

One-way tickets range from approximately MXN $800 (around $42 USD) to MXN $1,300 (around $65 USD), depending on the service level and how far in advance you book. Book ahead on the website or the ADO app and you can save up to 50%.

How long is the bus from Mexico City to Veracruz?

The trip takes approximately 5 hours on a direct ADO service. The route runs via the MEX-150D Autopista, a modern toll highway that climbs through the Sierra Madre past Puebla and Orizaba — with views of Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba), the tallest peak in Mexico — before descending to the Gulf Coast.

What time do buses from Mexico City to Veracruz leave?

ADO offers dozens of daily departures to Veracruz, roughly every 30–60 minutes from early morning to midnight, with overnight options as well. You can depart from TAPO (the main eastern terminal), Terminal del Norte (the northern terminal), or even directly from Mexico City International Airport via ADO Aeropuerto — ideal if you're connecting from a flight. With so many departures across multiple terminals, there's almost always a bus leaving within the hour.

Which terminal does the bus leave from in Mexico City?

You have three convenient departure options. TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente) is the primary hub for Veracruz routes — it's on the east side of the city, connected directly to Metro San Lázaro (Line 1). Terminal del Norte offers additional departures and is convenient if you're staying in northern Mexico City — accessible via Metro Autobuses del Norte (Line 5). ADO Aeropuerto runs services directly from Mexico City International Airport (Terminal 1), perfect for travelers arriving by air who want to head straight to Veracruz without entering the city. Always double-check your ticket for the correct terminal.

Where does the bus arrive in Veracruz?

Buses arrive at the Central de Autobuses de Veracruz (ADO Veracruz), located on Avenida Salvador Díaz Mirón. The terminal is centrally located, just minutes by taxi or ride-hailing app from the Zócalo, the Malecón, the harbor, and the main hotel zone. Everything you'll want to see in the historic centro is within easy reach.

Can I cancel or change my ADO bus ticket?

You can cancel your ticket up to 60 minutes before departure at any ADO ticket office. You must present the original ticket and an official ID matching the ticketholder's name. Refunds are issued as Saldo Max credit, not back to your original payment method. Advance-purchase discounted tickets are more restrictive and generally non-refundable. If you don't know your new date, you can request an open ticket for the same route to rebook later.

Is there a flexible ticket option?

ADO's standard full-price tickets allow exchanges up to 60 minutes before departure at any ticket window. Discounted advance-purchase tickets are typically non-exchangeable and non-refundable.

Does the bus make stops along the way?

ADO's GL and Platino services from Mexico City to Veracruz run as direct routes — no intermediate stops. This is one of the key advantages of booking the premium service tiers. Standard ADO first-class buses may make a brief stop in Puebla or Córdoba depending on the departure, so check the schedule details when booking.

How much luggage can I bring?

Each passenger can take up to 25 kg of checked baggage free of charge. Your bags are stored in a locked compartment under the bus, and you receive a claim tag to retrieve them upon arrival. You can also carry one carry-on bag at no additional cost. On luxury services like Platino, baggage policies are even more generous with no extra charges for excess luggage.

What does the Platino (luxury) service include?

ADO Platino features wide leather reclining seats with extra legroom, air conditioning, onboard entertainment, limited Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, USB charging ports, and an onboard restroom. Passengers also get access to the exclusive Platino departure lounge at select terminals, with complimentary Wi-Fi, coffee, and a comfortable waiting area. A travel kit with snacks and beverages may be provided on select departures.

Can I book my ticket in English?

Yes! At ADO International we offer an ADO booking experience in many different languages, adapting to the needs of travelers, visitors, and passengers from all over the world. Digital boarding passes are sent by email — no need to print.

Do I need an ID to board?

Yes. Carry a valid government-issued photo ID (passport for international travelers, INE for Mexican citizens) that matches the name on your ticket. While ID checks aren't always enforced on domestic routes, it's required for cancellations, exchanges, and occasionally at boarding.

Is the Mexico City to Veracruz bus safe?

ADO operates modern buses equipped with GPS tracking, professional certified drivers, and safety features including three-point seatbelts on premium services. The route runs on the MEX-150D, a well-maintained toll highway. It's common to encounter routine police checkpoints along the route — just keep your ID handy. ADO is consistently rated as one of the safest bus operators in Mexico, and the Mexico City–Veracruz corridor is one of the most frequently traveled routes in the country.

Can I travel with children?

Children under 5 years old travel free if sharing a seat with an accompanying adult. Children over 5 require their own ticket. Unaccompanied minors under 18 are generally not permitted without an authorized adult. If traveling with an infant, an early morning departure is a smart choice — they'll likely nap through the scenic mountain crossing and wake up at the Gulf Coast.
