Seeing the volcanoes from Puebla

Popocatépetl ("smoking mountain", 5,393 m) is one of Mexico's most active volcanoes and often sends up plumes of steam and ash. Its neighbour Iztaccíhuatl ("white woman", 5,230 m) looks like a woman lying on her back. Both rise about 40 km west of Puebla.

Step 1: ADO bus to Puebla

About 190 ADO buses a day run from Mexico City to Puebla, including over 50 from TAPO (about 2 hours, from US$15.50). See Mexico City to Puebla. Airport buses also run from Mexico City (AICM) and AIFA.

Step 2: the best viewpoints

  • Cholula: the church on top of the Great Pyramid frames both volcanoes on clear mornings. Cholula is a short taxi or local bus ride from Puebla.
  • Puebla's historic centre: rooftop terraces and the Estrella de Puebla Ferris wheel look west to the volcanoes.
  • Views are best from November to March, early in the morning, before clouds build.

Going closer: Paso de Cortés and Iztaccíhuatl

  • Paso de Cortés (3,688 m) is the pass between the two volcanoes, crossed by Hernán Cortés in 1519, with a visitor centre of Izta-Popo National Park. The park fee is about MXN 125 per person per day (2026), and a vehicle permit for the road to La Joya is booked online with the park.
  • There is no scheduled public transport from the Puebla side to Paso de Cortés. The usual route without a car is via Amecameca (non-ADO buses from eastern Mexico City), then a taxi, or a guided tour with transport.
  • Iztaccíhuatl is climbed from La Joya (about 3,975 m): about 12 km round trip and 10–14 hours along a rocky ridge, with ice near the top. A guide is recommended.

Bus times, travel times and fares on this page come from the ADO booking flow for Wednesday, December 2, 2026, and can change. Search your travel date for live times. Park fees, opening hours and local transport are set by each park, operator and driver; the figures here are approximate 2026 prices, so confirm them locally. Mountain conditions change quickly: check the weather and any park closures before you go.

Popocatépetl safety

  • Climbing Popocatépetl is prohibited. The volcano has an exclusion zone (12 km in late 2026, at alert level Yellow Phase 2).
  • Paso de Cortés lies within that radius, so access is controlled and can close at short notice. Check the alert level with CENAPRED (cenapred.unam.mx) on the day you travel.
  • Ash can fall on Puebla and close the airport; keep an eye on local news.

From Puebla, La Malinche is the easiest high-altitude day hike, and Pico de Orizaba is about 2–3 hours east. For food after the hike, see where to eat in Puebla.
