Learning Spanish in Mexico: the essentials
Mexico is one of the best places in the world to learn Spanish: the accent is clear, people are patient with learners, and daily life gives you endless practice. Choose a city where Spanish is the everyday language, not a beach resort where everyone answers in English.
How to make it stick
- Take classes in the morning and practise in the afternoon: markets, cafés, cooking classes and museums.
- Stay with a host family: most schools can arrange a homestay, the fastest way to improve your listening.
- Join an intercambio: a language exchange where you swap half an hour of English for half an hour of Spanish.
- Travel on weekends: buying tickets, asking for directions and chatting with your seat neighbour are real-life lessons.
- Get a certificate: the Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa is an official centre for the SIELE Spanish exam.
Practise your Spanish at the bus station
- Un boleto a Oaxaca, por favor.: One ticket to Oaxaca, please.
- ¿A qué hora sale el próximo autobús?: What time does the next bus leave?
- ¿De qué andén sale?: Which platform does it leave from?
- ¿Cuánto dura el viaje?: How long is the journey?
- ¿Este asiento está libre?: Is this seat free?
- ¿Dónde está la parada de taxis?: Where is the taxi rank?
Bus times, fares and onboard features on this page come from the ADO booking flow for Saturday, December 5, 2026, and can change. Discounts, luggage rules and accessibility services are set by ADO and can change too: check the conditions shown when you book, or ask at the ADO ticket office. Entry fees and opening hours are set by each site.
Five Mexican cities for learning Spanish
Long-running schools, local life and easy ADO bus links:
Oaxaca
By bus: from Mexico City, about 6–8 hours, from about US$57
Schools include the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca (since 1984) and Becari Language School. The Oaxaca Lending Library hosts a free Saturday morning intercambio. Where to eat in Oaxaca.
Xalapa
By bus: from Mexico City, about 4h 20min–5h 40min, from about US$33
A university city where few visitors speak English. The Universidad Veracruzana's School for Foreign Students has taught Spanish since 1957.
Mérida
By bus: from Cancún, about 4h 10min–5h, from about US$42
A relaxed, safe city with schools such as the Institute of Modern Spanish (since 1995) and Hola Spanish School, plus regular language exchange meetups. Where to eat in Mérida.
Puebla
By bus: from Mexico City, about 2 hours, over 150 ADO buses a day
A big student city with the Spanish Institute of Puebla, and quick bus trips to Cholula and the volcanoes.
Playa del Carmen
By bus: from Cancún, about 45 minutes–1h 45min, from about US$4
If you want classes by the sea, International House Riviera Maya runs small groups. Practise away from the tourist strip, in the neighbourhoods west of the highway.
Practise on the road
By bus: weekend trips from any of these cities
From Oaxaca, Puebla or Mérida, ADO buses reach small towns where English is rare. Budget getaways from Mérida.
The market is your best classroom
- Learn the numbers and weights: medio kilo (half a kilo), un cuarto (a quarter).
- Ask what something is: ¿Qué es esto? ¿Cómo se come? (What is this? How do you eat it?)
- Order at a market food stall and chat with the cook: they'll often be happy to talk.
- Greet people with buenos días or buenas tardes before anything else; it's expected in Mexico.
Before you book a course
- Compare class size, hours per week and whether a placement test is included.
- Ask about homestays, cultural activities and weekend excursions.
- A visitor permit lets you take short courses; longer study programmes may need a student visa, so check before you go.
