Getting to Pico de Orizaba: the essentials
Pico de Orizaba, or Citlaltépetl ("star mountain" in Nahuatl), rises to 5,636 m on the border of Puebla and Veracruz. On clear mornings it can be seen from the Gulf coast. The standard north route starts at the Piedra Grande hut (about 4,250 m) and crosses the Jamapa glacier. Climbers base themselves in Tlachichuca (2,600 m), a farming village 18 km from Ciudad Serdán.
Step 1: ADO bus from Mexico City to Ciudad Serdán
- Mexico City TAPO (Metro San Lázaro): direct buses at about 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM on our sample date (Saturday, December 5, 2026), stopping at Santa Martha Acatitla, about 3h 20min–3h 55min, from US$24. Service does not run every day, so search your date.
- Coming back: buses from Ciudad Serdán to TAPO left at 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM on our sample Sunday, about 4h 10min, from US$23.
- Via Puebla: over 50 ADO buses a day run from TAPO to Puebla (about 2 hours). See Mexico City to Puebla. From Puebla, regional buses continue to Ciudad Serdán; ask at the terminal.
Step 2: from Ciudad Serdán to Tlachichuca
Combis (shared vans) leave from a terminal in Ciudad Serdán for the 20–30 minute ride to Tlachichuca; ask locally for the fare. Many climbers arrange a pick-up with their outfitter instead.
Step 3: Tlachichuca to the Piedra Grande hut
- No public transport enters the national park. Family-run outfitters in Tlachichuca, such as Servimont and Summit Orizaba, offer lodging, gear rental, guides and 4WD transport to the hut, a rough 1.5–2 hour drive.
- The Piedra Grande hut has two simple shelters, free and first come, first served.
- Park fee: about MXN 120–125 per person per day (2026 federal park fee). Keep your bracelet or receipt.
Step 4: the climb
- Summit day gains about 1,380 m: a rocky section called the Labyrinth, then a 35–40° snow and ice slope to the crater rim.
- Climbers usually start around 1–2 AM and need 10–14 hours round trip.
- Bring mountaineering boots, crampons, an ice axe, harness and helmet, warm layers, a −15 °C sleeping bag and a stove to melt snow.
Bus times, travel times and fares on this page come from the ADO booking flow for Saturday, December 5, 2026, and can change. Search your travel date for live times. Park fees, opening hours and local transport are set by each park, operator and driver; the figures here are approximate 2026 prices, so confirm them locally. Mountain conditions change quickly: check the weather and any park closures before you go.

Acclimatise first, and climb with a guide
Driving to 4,250 m is not acclimatisation. Plan 4–7 days at altitude before your summit attempt:
- Hike La Malinche (4,461 m), the classic first step, about 1h 40min from Puebla.
- Add Cofre de Perote (4,282 m) or, with a tour, Iztaccíhuatl (5,230 m).
- Sleep in Tlachichuca and at the hut before summit day.
Safety on the mountain
- The Jamapa glacier has crevasses and hard ice; falls on the upper slope have killed climbers, most recently four in August 2023.
- Cold fronts can close access and bring whiteouts. Check the forecast and any park closures.
- Know the signs of altitude sickness and descend if they appear. A licensed local guide is strongly recommended.
The best season is November to March, when the snow is firmer and the weather more stable.
