Getting to Gran Cenote: the essentials
Gran Cenote is a semi-open cenote on the road from Tulum to Cobá and one of the entrances to Sistema Sac Actun, one of the longest underwater cave systems known. An open, sunlit pool connects to a short cave section, the water is very clear, and freshwater turtles swim past snorkelers. It is about 4 km from the ADO terminal in Tulum.
Step 1: take the ADO bus to Tulum
The ADO terminal is downtown on Avenida Tulum, between Calle Júpiter and Calle Alfa Norte.

Step 3: at the cenote
- Entry cost about MXN 500 per person in 2026. Bring cash in pesos.
- Open about 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM, with last entry around 4:00 PM.
- Snorkel gear rents for about MXN 50–100 and lockers for about MXN 20–50. Showers and changing rooms are on site; bring your own towel.

Tips for a great swim
- Go early. Arrive at 8 AM, before the tour groups (from about 10:30 AM). Turtles are easiest to see in the morning.
- No sunscreen. Shower before you swim and keep sunscreen, repellent and lotion out of the water. Wear a rash guard instead.
- Look, don't touch. Leave the turtles and rock formations alone, and don't use a flash underwater.
- Cave diving is only for certified divers with a local guide.
