Getting to Cenote Suytun: the essentials

Cenote Suytun is a cave cenote: an underground lake lit through one round hole in the ceiling. A stone walkway leads to a circular platform in the middle of the water, and around midday a single beam of sunlight falls straight onto it. It is about 8 km east of Valladolid, off Highway 180 towards Cancún.

Step 1: take the ADO bus to Valladolid

The ADO terminal is in the centre of Valladolid, at Calle 39 and Calle 46, two blocks from the main square.

  • Cancún (ADO bus station, downtown): 6 buses a day at 7:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM, 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM, about 2h 25min, from US$23. See this route
  • Mérida: 15 buses a day from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, about 2h 25min to 3h 30min, from US$21. See this route
  • Tulum (ADO terminal): 7 buses a day, including 8:57 AM, 10:47 AM and 1:55 PM, about 1h 45min, from US$13.50.
  • Playa del Carmen (Alterna terminal): 6 buses a day, including 7:37 AM and 9:27 AM, about 3h 05min, from US$22.

Step 2: from Valladolid to the cenote

  • Taxi: about MXN 100–150 each way in 2026, 10–15 minutes. Agree the price first and arrange your ride back.
  • Colectivo: shared vans towards Cancún pass the turn-off, about MXN 20. Ask locally where they leave from.
  • Bike: rentals in town costs about MXN 100–150 a day. The ride is flat but hot, about 30–40 minutes.

Step 3: at the cenote

  • Entry cost about MXN 250–300 per adult in 2026. Bring cash in pesos.
  • Open daily, usually 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, last entry around 4:00–4:30 PM.
  • Life jackets are provided, and there is a restaurant on site.

Leaving Valladolid

  • Cancún: 6 buses a day from 7:10 AM to 6:40 PM, about 2h 30min. See this route
  • Mérida: 15 buses a day, about 2h 25min. See this route
  • Tulum: 3 buses a day (10:30 AM, 7:22 PM and 9:22 PM), about 1h 45min. See this route

Mind the time zone

Yucatán state (Mérida, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá) is one hour behind Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar). Bus times are always local, so a trip between the two states looks one hour longer or shorter on your ticket than it really is.

Bus times, travel times and fares on this page come from the ADO booking flow for Wednesday, December 2, 2026, and can change. Search your travel date for live times. Entry fees, opening hours and taxi fares are set by each site and driver; the figures here are approximate 2026 prices, so confirm them on arrival.

Make a day of it: Valladolid's other cenotes

Valladolid is the best base for cenote hopping in Yucatán. Combine Suytun with:

  • Cenote Zací: an open cenote right in town, about a 10-minute walk from the ADO terminal. Entry about MXN 60.
  • Cenotes X'Kekén and Samulá (Dzitnup): two cave cenotes in one park, about 7 km south-west of town, on the opposite side from Suytun. About MXN 80 each or MXN 125 for both. Colectivos leave near the ADO terminal.
  • Ek Balam: Maya ruins north of town, reached by colectivo.

When to see the beam of light

The sunbeam reaches the platform at about 11 AM to 1 PM, best in the dry season (December to February). That is also the busiest time. For a quieter visit, come at 9 AM or after 3 PM on a weekday.

Shower before you swim, use no sunscreen in the water, and don't dive or jump.
