Getting to Cofre de Perote: the essentials
Cofre de Perote, or Naucampatépetl, rises to 4,282 m in Veracruz. Its summit is a rectangular block of rock, the "cofre" (chest), topped with antennas and visible from Xalapa. The most-used route starts at the village of El Conejo (about 3,250 m), 15 km from Perote.
Step 1: ADO bus to Perote
The ADO terminal is in the centre of Perote, on Calle Francisco I. Madero.
- Mexico City TAPO (Metro San Lázaro): 18 buses a day from 1:15 AM to 11:59 PM, about 3h 50min–4h 25min, from US$24.
- Puebla (CAPU): 8 buses a day from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM, about 1h 40min, from US$16.50.
- Xalapa: 21 buses a day, about 65 minutes, from US$6.50. Xalapa is a good base with more hotels.
- Back: 17 buses a day to Mexico City, 8 to Puebla and 23 to Xalapa.
Step 2: Perote to El Conejo
Take a taxi for the 15 km (about 30 minutes); agree the price first. Local buses also run, but not often. There are no hotels in El Conejo, so sleep in Perote and leave early.
Step 3: the hike
- From El Conejo a rocky track climbs about 1,000 m to the base of the summit block in 3–4 hours. A full loop is about 14 km; allow 6–7 hours.
- Park fee: about MXN 120–125 per person per day (2026 federal park fee) (Parque Nacional Cofre de Perote, 1937).
- The antenna area at the top may be fenced; stay on the track.

Plan your Cofre de Perote hike
- Best season: November to March for clearer skies. Snow and sleet can fall from December to February, and access is sometimes limited after storms.
- Weather: fog and sudden cold are common. In low visibility, stay on the road or track.
- Gear: warm layers, a waterproof jacket, boots, 2 litres of water and a headlamp.
Combine it with Xalapa and Pico de Orizaba
From Xalapa you can often see both the Cofre and, further south, the snowy cone of Pico de Orizaba. Cofre de Perote is good acclimatisation before climbing Pico de Orizaba.
