Travelling by bus in Mexico City & Central Mexico
Mexico City is the hub of Mexico's long-distance bus network. Rather than one central station, the capital splits departures between big terminals named after the direction they serve, plus bus stations inside both international airports. Choosing the right one can save you an hour or more crossing the city.
Around the capital, Pachuca in Hidalgo and Tepoztlán in Morelos are popular short trips, and both are easy to reach by bus. Knowing which terminal serves which direction, and how to reach it by Metro or authorised taxi, is the key to a smooth start to any trip in central Mexico.
How ADO serves Mexico City & Central Mexico
ADO was founded in 1939 and is still headquartered in Mexico City. Its main hub in the capital is TAPO, the starting point for most trips east and southeast to Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas and the Yucatán Peninsula. ADO and its premium classes, ADO GL (Gran Lujo) and ADO Platino (executive), also run from Terminal Norte and Terminal Sur. OCC, another Grupo ADO brand, runs services from Taxqueña to Morelos and the Oaxaca coast. ADO GL runs from the AICM airport bus station to Córdoba and Orizaba, and ADO and ADO GL both sell tickets at the AIFA airport bus terminal. ADO also serves Pachuca from Terminal Norte and from AIFA.

Mexico City TAPO San Lazaro Bus Station (TAPO)
Address: Metro San Lazaro Artilleros 7 de Julio, 15390, Mexico City
Coordinates: 19.43004, -99.11390
ADO lines: ADO, ADO Conecta, AU
Departures: about 619 ADO connections a day to 86 cities
The Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente opened in 1978. It sits under a huge dome in the Venustiano Carranza borough, east of the historic centre. It is ADO's main Mexico City hub, with buses east and southeast to Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas and the Yucatán Peninsula.
Getting there: The terminal connects directly to Metro San Lázaro (Lines 1 and B), and Metrobús Line 4 also stops at San Lázaro. Authorised taxis are dispatched from an underground taxi station inside the complex. Traffic around the terminal gets heavy at rush hour, so allow extra time if you come by road.
Facilities: Ticket counters and boarding gates run around the outer ring of the dome, and the centre has a food court and shops. The terminal also has accessible ramps, lifts and restrooms.
Tip: Plan for up to an extra hour to reach TAPO by road at peak times. During Christmas and Holy Week, passenger numbers rise sharply, so buy tickets early.

Getting there: Metro Line 5 stops at Autobuses del Norte station, right outside the terminal. Trolleybus Line 1, the zero-emission Eje Central corridor, runs between this terminal and Terminal Sur through the city centre. A safe taxi service operates from inside the building.
Facilities: It is a large terminal with dozens of ticket counters, eight waiting rooms, shops and surface parking.
Tip: Many lines share this terminal, so check your ticket for the operator and boarding gate. This terminal is also the usual city departure point for buses to the AIFA airport.

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has an intercity bus station in each terminal, open 24 hours a day, so you can leave the city without crossing it first. The airport's operator list includes ADO GL to Córdoba and Orizaba. Other companies serve Puebla, Cuernavaca, Querétaro, Pachuca and Toluca, and ADO also runs direct services from Terminal 1, for example to Xalapa.
Getting there: In Terminal 1, the bus station is in the international area between gates 7 and 8, reached from sala F on the first level next to the fast-food area. In Terminal 2, it is beside the building, reached from sala D, gate 4, or next to domestic arrivals. Metro Line 5 serves Terminal 1 and Metrobús Line 4 serves both terminals.
Facilities: Terminal 1 has ticket booths, a waiting room, internet, fast food, souvenir shops and restrooms. Terminal 2 has ticket booths, a waiting room, internet and fast food.
Tip: If you land late at night, a direct bus from the airport is easier than a late transfer to TAPO. Check which terminal your bus leaves from, because most buses call at both but not all do.

Tip: Buses from AIFA to AICM, Terminal Norte and Pachuca take about an hour in normal traffic. Leave a wide buffer before your flight, because traffic on the way out to AIFA is unpredictable.
