The journey from Puebla to Mexico City

Buses to Mexico City leave Puebla mainly from CAPU, and some also leave from ADO Paseo Destino. They take Highway 150D west past San Martín Texmelucan and climb to the high pass near Río Frío, with the snow-capped Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes to the south. The road then drops into the Valley of Mexico through Ixtapaluca, where traffic often thickens.

Inside Mexico City, the standard ADO route ends at TAPO, the eastern terminal next to San Lázaro Metro. Dedicated airport services go straight to the bus bays at AICM Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, so flyers do not need to cross the city. This is a short, busy commuter corridor with frequent departures, and the coaches are air-conditioned with reclining seats.

When the buses leave

  • Morning (5:00–11:59): about 88 a day
  • Afternoon (12:00–17:59): about 71 a day
  • Evening (18:00–23:59): about 30 a day
  • Night (0:00–4:59): about 17 a day

A typical trip takes around 2h 25min; the fastest services take around 1h 40min. Times and fares come from current ADO timetables for the next 30 days and change by date and service class.

ADO services on this route

  • ADO: about 147 a day
  • AU: about 58 a day
  • ADO GL: about 2 a day

ADO is the standard first-class service; ADO GL adds more legroom and extras, and ADO Platino has the widest seats. AU and ADO Aeropuerto cover regional and airport routes.

Sample departure times

Arriving in Mexico City

Many people on this route are heading to Mexico City International Airport (AICM) for a flight, and direct buses drop them right at the terminal buildings. Others come for the capital itself. From TAPO the Metro reaches the Centro Histórico quickly, where the Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor and the Palacio de Bellas Artes are found. Business trips, hospital appointments, concerts and the museums of Chapultepec, including the Museo Nacional de Antropología, are other common reasons to travel.

Tips for the Puebla–Mexico City bus

Tip 1

If you are flying, book a bus that goes straight to the airport rather than to TAPO, and check whether it stops at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 for your airline.

Tip 2

Leave extra time for traffic on the approach to Mexico City, especially on Friday evenings and on Sunday and holiday returns.

Tip 3

Sit on the left side heading to Mexico City for views of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl near the Río Frío pass on clear mornings.

Tip 4

At TAPO, use the authorised taxi booths inside the terminal or take Metro Lines 1 and B from San Lázaro.

Other ways to travel

No passenger train links Puebla and Mexico City. For travellers flying out of the capital, a direct bus to AICM is usually easier than flying from Puebla's own airport or taking a taxi across Mexico City.
