Things to do in Tierra Blanca: Railway town in the hot heart of the Papaloapan
Tierra Blanca grew up around the railway.

Why visit Tierra Blanca
Tierra Blanca grew up around the railway. Families from Tlalixcoyan founded it in 1868, and the line, station and rail workshops that arrived in the early 1900s turned it into a junction on the routes from Mexico City and the port of Veracruz toward the south. A preserved steam locomotive known as 'Mi Prieta Linda' still honours that past. Locals nickname the town 'la novia del sol', the sun's bride, for its heat, and the surrounding plains grow sugar cane and rice and raise cattle.
This is not a resort town, and it doesn't pretend to be one. It is a good place to see everyday life in the Papaloapan region. Try barbacoa de res with chile caldo, listen to son jarocho harpists, or join the December cattle fair. Tierra Blanca is also a practical bus hub for the Papaloapan basin. River towns such as Cosamaloapan and the UNESCO-listed Tlacotalpan are within reach, and the port of Veracruz is about 100 km away.

Top things to do in Tierra Blanca
The experiences travellers and locals rate most, all easy to reach once you step off the bus.

The municipality is known for the central style of son jarocho, a fast form of the music in which the harp leads, and several well-known harpists come from here. Ask at the Casa de la Cultura about fandangos or performances, especially during festivals.

The Estanzuela, Moreno, Hondo and Amapa rivers cross the municipality on their way to the Papaloapan. The flat, green landscape of cane fields and pasture is part of what makes the bus ride here memorable.

The railway heritage
The town owes its existence to the railway that arrived in the early 1900s, and the steam locomotive 'Mi Prieta Linda' stands as a monument near the old station. The station itself no longer has passenger service, but it is the best place to start a walk through the town's history.
Walk the centre
Spend an hour around the municipal palace, the Church of Our Lady of Carmen and the Casa de la Cultura 'Prof. Carlos Cruz Valenzuela'. Tierra Blanca is a working town, so expect markets and everyday commerce rather than souvenir shops.
Laguna María Lizamba
A lagoon in the municipality that is known locally for its seafood restaurants and for wintering water birds. It is a typical weekend outing for local families.
Cool off at a balneario
In the heat, swimming is what people do. La Bendición, a water park and hotel with pools, is the best-known option, and Spanish Wikipedia also mentions a natural spa in the municipality with sulphurous thermal water.
