Why visit Tierra Blanca

Tierra Blanca grew up around the railway. Families from Tlalixcoyan founded it in 1868, and the line, station and rail workshops that arrived in the early 1900s turned it into a junction on the routes from Mexico City and the port of Veracruz toward the south. A preserved steam locomotive known as 'Mi Prieta Linda' still honours that past. Locals nickname the town 'la novia del sol', the sun's bride, for its heat, and the surrounding plains grow sugar cane and rice and raise cattle.

This is not a resort town, and it doesn't pretend to be one. It is a good place to see everyday life in the Papaloapan region. Try barbacoa de res with chile caldo, listen to son jarocho harpists, or join the December cattle fair. Tierra Blanca is also a practical bus hub for the Papaloapan basin. River towns such as Cosamaloapan and the UNESCO-listed Tlacotalpan are within reach, and the port of Veracruz is about 100 km away.

Top things to do in Tierra Blanca

The experiences travellers and locals rate most, all easy to reach once you step off the bus.

The railway heritage

The town owes its existence to the railway that arrived in the early 1900s, and the steam locomotive 'Mi Prieta Linda' stands as a monument near the old station. The station itself no longer has passenger service, but it is the best place to start a walk through the town's history.

Walk the centre

Spend an hour around the municipal palace, the Church of Our Lady of Carmen and the Casa de la Cultura 'Prof. Carlos Cruz Valenzuela'. Tierra Blanca is a working town, so expect markets and everyday commerce rather than souvenir shops.

Laguna María Lizamba

A lagoon in the municipality that is known locally for its seafood restaurants and for wintering water birds. It is a typical weekend outing for local families.

Cool off at a balneario

In the heat, swimming is what people do. La Bendición, a water park and hotel with pools, is the best-known option, and Spanish Wikipedia also mentions a natural spa in the municipality with sulphurous thermal water.

What to eat in Tierra Blanca

  • Barbacoa de res con chile caldo: The town's signature dish: slow-cooked beef served with a spicy chile broth.
  • Garnachas: Small fried corn tortillas topped with shredded meat, salsa and onion, a Veracruz street snack.
  • Pilte de mojarra: Mojarra fish seasoned and cooked wrapped in leaves, a dish of the lowland river country.
  • Local cheeses and tamales: Cattle country means fresh regional cheeses, and tamales of several kinds are sold in the market and at street stands.

When to go and what is on

It is hot all year, with average highs above 30 °C. November to February is the most comfortable time, while the rainy season brings heavy summer and early-autumn storms and occasional flooding from Gulf hurricanes in the Papaloapan basin.

Festivals worth planning around

  • Carnival (April to May): The local carnival, with a Rey Momo, has live music, dancing, contests, food stalls and the crowning of a king and queen.
  • Virgen de Guadalupe and the regional cattle fair (1 to 12 December (Guadalupe); cattle fair about 11 to 19 December): Pilgrimages and an illuminated shrine lead up to 12 December, followed by the regional livestock fair.
  • Nuestra Señora del Carmen (16 July): The feast of the Virgin of Carmen, centred on the town's Carmen church.
