Why visit Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen's main ADO terminal sits at the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juárez, a short walk from the sand, the Cozumel ferry pier and Parque Fundadores. Most visitors never leave the pedestrian strip, but the terminal works best as a launch pad. Buses and colectivos run down Highway 307 to the Tulum ruins, Cobá and the cenotes along the coast, and longer routes reach colonial Valladolid, Bacalar's lagoon and Chiquilá, the port for Holbox.

Mexican families use Playa differently from the resort crowd. On Sundays they gather at Punta Esmeralda, where a cenote spills into a calm, shallow pool at the north end of town. People eat breakfast at street stands a couple of blocks inland, and in February they pack Plaza 28 de Julio for carnival parades and free concerts. Arrive by bus, drop your bag, and you are in the middle of it.

Top things to do in Playa del Carmen

The experiences travellers and locals rate most, all easy to reach once you step off the bus.

Swim at Punta Esmeralda

This free public beach at the north end of town has a freshwater cenote that runs into the sea and forms a knee-deep, sheltered pool. Local families come here, especially on Sundays. Lonely Planet notes it tends to collect less sargassum than other town beaches.

Climb into the jungle at Cobá

Cobá is a large Maya site set in forest, about 110 km from Playa, with sacbé causeways and one of the tallest pyramids on the peninsula. It makes a full day, and pairs well with a cenote stop on the way back.

Holbox via Chiquilá

ADO and its second-class line run buses from Playa to Chiquilá, where ferries cross to car-free Isla Holbox. Forum travellers say departures are limited, mostly morning out and late afternoon back. Most people stay at least a night rather than doing a day trip.

Do it like a local

What Mexican travellers do in Playa del Carmen, from forums, local guides and people who live there.

  • Families spend Sundays at Punta Esmeralda, the free beach with a cenote-fed pool.
  • Crowds fill Plaza 28 de Julio for carnival parades and free concerts each February.
  • People eat breakfast at street stands a few blocks inland, not on Fifth Avenue.
  • Locals take colectivos along Highway 307 to swim in cenotes on days off.

What to eat in Playa del Carmen

  • Cochinita pibil tacos: Pork slow-cooked in achiote and sour orange, the Yucatán's signature dish, usually eaten at breakfast or lunch with pickled red onion.
  • Street-cart breakfast: Stands near Parque Leona Vicario on Calle 2 Norte serve tacos and tortas from early morning until late morning, at a fraction of Fifth Avenue prices.
  • Beachfront seafood: Ceviche, fish tacos and whole grilled fish at simple palapa places; walking two blocks inland from Quinta Avenida is the usual tip for better value.
  • Marquesitas: A crisp rolled crêpe filled with Edam cheese, Nutella or cajeta, the classic Yucatecan evening street snack.

When to go and what is on

December to April is drier and usually has the least sargassum. Seaweed tends to peak from about May to August, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most storms from August to October.

Festivals worth planning around

  • Carnaval de Playa del Carmen (February or early March, the days before Lent): Parades of comparsas and floats run through the centre to Plaza 28 de Julio, with free nightly concerts that draw tens of thousands of people.
  • Festival de Tradiciones de Vida y Muerte (30 October to 2 November): Xcaret park, just south of Playa, hosts a large Day of the Dead festival with altars, music, theatre and food from a guest Mexican state.
  • Travesía Sagrada Maya (Usually May or June (suspended in 2026)): Hundreds of paddlers re-enact the Maya canoe pilgrimage from the old port of Polé, now Playa del Carmen, to Cozumel. Grupo Xcaret called the 2026 suspension temporary.
