The journey from Cancún to Bacalar
This is one of the longer runs in Quintana Roo, following Highway 307 almost its whole length through the state. South of Cancún the bus passes Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, then leaves the resort strip behind. Beyond Tulum the road skirts the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve near the Muyil ruins and Chunyaxché, crosses long stretches of jungle and passes through Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a Maya town tied to the history of the Caste War.
Further south, villages thin out until Bacalar's lagoon appears beside the road. The Bacalar ADO terminal is on Highway 307 at the edge of town, roughly 1 to 2 km from the main square and most lakeside hotels; taxis usually wait for arrivals. Northbound, buses end at the downtown Cancún terminal.
When the buses leave
- Morning (5:00–11:59): about 4 a day
- Afternoon (12:00–17:59): about 5 a day
- Evening (18:00–23:59): about 5 a day
- Night (0:00–4:59): occasional departures
A typical trip takes around 5h 40min; the fastest services take around 5h 20min. Times and fares come from current ADO timetables for the next 30 days and change by date and service class.

Travellers head south for Laguna Bacalar, the freshwater 'lagoon of seven colours' known for its shades of blue, calm water and no sargassum. Highlights include sailing and paddleboarding on the lagoon, the ancient stromatolites at Los Rápidos, the deep Cenote Azul, and the San Felipe fort with its small museum. Bacalar has been a Pueblo Mágico since 2006 and is a gateway to the Chacchoben and Ichkabal Maya sites.
Tips for the Cancún–Bacalar bus
Tip 1
Southbound buses to Bacalar leave from Cancún's downtown terminal, not the airport. Northbound, some buses from Bacalar continue to Cancún Airport, so check the arrival stop if you are flying out.
Tip 2
Book ahead for Fridays, Sundays and holiday periods, when southbound seats sell out.
Tip 3
Air conditioning on long ADO trips can be strong; keep a layer and snacks in your hand luggage.
Tip 4
Bring cash for Bacalar: ATMs in town are limited and can run dry in high season.
Other ways to travel
The Tren Maya links Cancún Airport and Bacalar but runs few daily trains and both stations sit outside the town centres, while private transfers cost far more for small groups. The ADO bus is the better choice from downtown Cancún, offering more departures and a terminal close to Bacalar's centre.
