Travelling by bus in Oaxaca
Oaxaca is one of Mexico's most varied states. It covers the colonial capital and Zapotec heritage of the Central Valleys, the surf and resort beaches of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, the windy Isthmus of Tehuantepec around Salina Cruz and Juchitán, and the tropical Papaloapan lowlands around Tuxtepec on the Veracruz border.
Long mountain roads have always made buses the backbone of travel here. New highways are changing the picture: the road from Oaxaca City to the coast near Puerto Escondido opened in 2024, and the Mitla–Tehuantepec highway opened in 2025. Even so, most journeys still begin or end at one of the state's ADO or OCC terminals.
How ADO serves Oaxaca
ADO's first-class, ADO GL and ADO Platino buses connect Oaxaca City with Mexico City, Puebla and the coast, and Mobility ADO has announced hundreds of new buses across these three classes for Oaxaca. OCC (Ómnibus Cristóbal Colón) runs many of the routes to the Isthmus and Chiapas, including night buses from Oaxaca to Salina Cruz. In Salina Cruz, ADO and OCC share one terminal, while second-class Sur buses use a separate station. In Tuxtepec, ADO and AU (Autobuses Unidos) are the main companies.

Oaxaca Bus Station (Terminal de Primera Clase (ADO))
Address: 5 de Mayo 1018, 68080, Oaxaca
Coordinates: 17.07052, -96.71680
ADO lines: ADO, ADO GL, ADO Platino, AU, Cuenca Express
Departures: about 172 ADO connections a day to 38 cities
This is Oaxaca City's main first-class bus station, used by ADO, ADO GL, ADO Platino and OCC. Buses run to Mexico City (TAPO), Puebla, Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, the Isthmus and Chiapas.
Getting there: The terminal is at Calzada Niños Héroes de Chapultepec 1036, on Highway 190 roughly 1.5 km north of the Zócalo. Taxis are the usual option, so agree the fare before you set off. Booking a ride through DiDi or Uber gets you a city taxi at a fixed price.
Facilities: Tickets can be bought at the station or online, and food and drinks are sold inside.
Tip: ADO also lists a smaller point of sale and departures on 5 de Mayo in Barrio de Jalatlaco, and second-class buses use a separate terminal. Check which station your ticket names.

Departures: about 24 ADO connections a day to 12 cities
This ADO terminal serves the surf town of Puerto Escondido. Buses run to Oaxaca City, along the coast toward Huatulco, and on long-distance routes to Mexico City and Chiapas.
Getting there: The terminal is on Avenida Oaxaca, close to the town centre and a few blocks from the main beach. Zicatela and the other beaches are a short taxi ride away. Taxis wait outside, but they only take pesos, so agree the fare first.
Tip: Since the 2024 highway opened, some Oaxaca buses are much faster than before, while others still take the long route, so check the journey time on your ticket. Bring a sweater, because these buses are often kept very cold.

Getting there: The terminal is on Calle Primero de Mayo in the Espinal district, a little over 1 km from the Zócalo. Uber generally works in town, and there is a taxi rank near the Zócalo.
Facilities: It is a modern, clean and compact station.
Tip: Company terminals are spread along the main highway into town (MEX-185), so make sure you go to the ADO/OCC station rather than the Sur terminal near the centre. The Tren Interoceánico to Coatzacoalcos is an alternative to the bus.

Tips for bus travel in Oaxaca
Tip 1
The highway from Oaxaca City to the coast near Puerto Escondido opened in 2024, but not every bus uses it. Compare journey times before you buy.
Tip 2
Mountain roads between the Central Valleys and the coast are winding. Take motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to car sickness, especially in shuttle vans.
Tip 3
Strong winds blow across the Isthmus from October to April. The La Venta–La Ventosa stretch near Juchitán is sometimes closed or slowed by gusts, so allow extra time.
Tip 4
In Oaxaca City, first-class and second-class buses use separate terminals, and ADO has more than one point of departure. Always check the station printed on your ticket.
