The journey from Valladolid to Tulum
Between Valladolid and Tulum the land changes from Yucatán's farmed plain to the denser forest of Quintana Roo. The most direct road heads east and then south past the Cobá archaeological zone, along a narrow two-lane highway lined with Maya villages. Roadside stalls sell carved wood, hammocks, fresh juice and coconuts, and the stretch near Tulum has been widened in recent years.
The road meets Highway 307 at Tulum, where buses arrive at the ADO terminal in the town centre (pueblo). Tulum's beaches and the cliff-top ruins are a few kilometres east of town, so most travellers continue by taxi, colectivo or bike.
When the buses leave
- Morning (5:00–11:59): about 2 a day
- Afternoon (12:00–17:59): occasional departures
- Evening (18:00–23:59): about 2 a day

A typical trip takes around 1h 45min; the fastest services take around 1h 45min. Times and fares come from current ADO timetables for the next 30 days and change by date and service class.

Tulum is the southern Riviera Maya's best-known town, combining a Maya walled city above the Caribbean with long white beaches such as Playa Ruinas, Playa Paraíso and Playa Pescadores. Nearby cenotes include Gran Cenote, Calavera, Cristal and Escondido, and the UNESCO-listed Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve to the south offers lagoon and mangrove boat trips. Coming from Valladolid, travellers trade colonial streets and inland cenotes for the coast.
Tips for the Valladolid–Tulum bus
Tip 1
Tulum has more than one ADO stop; check whether your ticket ends at the central terminal in the pueblo or elsewhere.
Tip 2
The ruins and beaches are away from the bus terminal; budget for a taxi or rent a bike, and carry a light at night.
Tip 3
Visit Tulum's archaeological site soon after opening, because it gets crowded from mid-morning.
Tip 4
Carry pesos; paying taxis in dollars often means a poor rate.
Other ways to travel
Colectivos can cover the trip in stages via Cobá, and the Tren Maya links Valladolid and Tulum only by a long loop through Cancún and Playa del Carmen. The ADO bus is the more direct public option.
