The journey from Valladolid to Bacalar
Heading south from Valladolid to Bacalar takes you from Yucatán's colonial heartland into the forests of southern Quintana Roo. Depending on the service, the route runs either via the coast at Tulum or inland through the Maya interior on Highway 295 past Tihosuco. Both routes reach Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the former Caste War stronghold of the Talking Cross, then follow Highway 307 south through thick forest and small ejido villages.
The landscape is flat and green, with few large towns after Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Buses arrive at Bacalar's ADO station on Highway 307, about 1 km northwest of the centre and the lagoon shore.

Bacalar sits on the Laguna de los Siete Colores, a long freshwater lagoon famous for its bands of turquoise and blue. Visitors kayak, paddleboard or sail on the lagoon, swim at Cenote Azul, see the ancient stromatolites at Los Rápidos, and visit the Fuerte de San Felipe, an 18th-century fort with a small museum above the water. It is a slower, quieter alternative to the Riviera Maya and a stepping stone to Chetumal and Belize.
