The journey from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca

The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla toll highway opened in February 2024. Its 104 km of modern road cross the Sierra Madre del Sur and reach Federal Highway 200 near the coast at Ventanilla. It replaced the old routes over the mountains as the main link: Highway 131 through Sola de Vega, and Highway 175 through San José del Pacífico and Pochutla, both slow, winding roads that rain often damages. ADO and OCC coaches and many shuttle vans now use the new road.

The drive descends from Oaxaca's central valleys through pine-covered ridges down to the tropical Pacific lowlands, with a clear change in temperature and vegetation along the way. In Puerto Escondido, ADO buses arrive at their own terminal, a short taxi ride from the main beaches. Shuttle vans have their own offices in both cities. Community blockades on the new highway have occasionally delayed buses.

When the buses leave

  • Morning (5:00–11:59): about 2 a day
  • Afternoon (12:00–17:59): about 2 a day
  • Evening (18:00–23:59): about 1 a day
  • Night (0:00–4:59): none

A typical trip takes around 3h 00min; the fastest services take around 3h 00min. Times and fares come from current ADO timetables for the next 30 days and change by date and service class.

Arriving in Oaxaca

Coming up from the coast, travellers trade beach time for Oaxaca city's colonial centre, food markets, mezcal and museums. Highlights include the Templo de Santo Domingo and the Museo de las Culturas, the ruins of Monte Albán and Mitla, and Hierve el Agua. The city is also the main hub for onward buses to Mexico City, Puebla and Chiapas.

Tips for the Puerto Escondido–Oaxaca bus

Tip 1

Choose the bus or a van that uses the new highway. Some vans still take the old mountain roads, and those routes are much slower and twistier.

Tip 2

If you get motion sickness, take tablets before departure, especially in a van on the old roads. In a van, ask for a front seat.

Tip 3

Blockades occasionally stop traffic on this corridor. Travel in daylight when you can, and keep water and snacks with you.

Tip 4

Book a day ahead in high season, from November to March and around Semana Santa and Christmas, when coastal departures fill up.

Other ways to travel

Shared vans run frequently through the day between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido. Since the new highway opened, the bus is a comfortable, roomier option with more luggage space.
