The journey from Oaxaca to Puebla
In Puebla, buses to Oaxaca leave from CAPU, the main bus station north of the centre, and some also use ADO Paseo Destino on the south side of the city. The coach heads east on Highway 150D to the Cuacnopalan interchange and then follows toll Highway 135D south, bypassing Tehuacán.
Beyond Tehuacán the scenery turns dry and rugged. The road runs through valleys and canyons in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve, where forests of tall columnar cacti line the hillsides. Few towns lie along the toll road, and it joins Highway 190 northwest of Oaxaca city near Telixtlahuaca. In Oaxaca, buses arrive at the first-class terminal on Calzada Niños Héroes. Some stretches have landslide-prone slopes and occasional maintenance closures.

Puebla's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cathedral, built between 1575 and 1640, has two of the tallest church towers in Mexico. The city is famous for hand-painted Talavera pottery, which you can still see being made in long-running workshops, and it is widely credited as the birthplace of mole poblano. Cholula, about 10 km away, has what is considered the world's largest pyramid by volume, topped by a hilltop church.

Confirm whether your ticket departs from CAPU or from ADO Paseo Destino, because the two terminals are on opposite sides of Puebla.

Carry a warm layer, since coaches are air-conditioned and the Oaxaca valleys get cool after dark.

Have snacks and water with you, because the toll road through the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley passes very few towns.

Buy tickets early around the Guelaguetza in July and Día de Muertos in late October and early November, when demand for Oaxaca rises sharply.
