Why visit Tehuantepec

Tehuantepec was the seat of the last Zapotec kings before the Spanish conquest, and the hill fortress of Guiengola above town is where the Zapotecs held off the Aztec army. Today it is a lively river town of colonial churches, a women-run market and the embroidered tehuana dress that Frida Kahlo made famous worldwide.

Few foreigners stop here: most see only the highway between Oaxaca and the coast or Chiapas. Those who do find a slower, friendlier town than Juchitán, a calendar packed with neighbourhood velas, and a convenient base for the Pacific beaches of Salina Cruz and the springs of the northern Isthmus.

Top things to do in Tehuantepec

The experiences travellers and locals rate most, all easy to reach once you step off the bus.

The market and the plaza

The indoor market on the west side of the main plaza is open daily and spills into the surrounding streets, with tehuana women selling food, flowers, gold jewellery and embroidered clothing. Around the plaza you will find the town hall and the house of Juana Catalina Romero, a 19th-century local businesswoman and political figure.

Monumento a la Mujer Tehuana

A seven-metre steel sculpture of a woman in tehuana dress greets you at the entrance to town. It is a tribute to the central economic and social role of Isthmus women and a favourite photo stop.

Iron bridge walkway and Río Tehuantepec

An old Porfirian-era railway bridge over the Tehuantepec River is now a pedestrian walkway. Walk it at sunset and continue along the river, then explore the bougainvillea-lined streets and neighbourhood churches such as San Juan, San Sebastián and Santa María.

Garnachas on the zócalo at night

After dark, stalls on the main square serve garnachas and other Isthmus snacks. Travellers on forums recommend exploring the market early in the day and coming back to the plaza to eat in the evening.

Do it like a local

What Mexican travellers do in Tehuantepec, from forums, local guides and people who live there.

  • Follow neighbourhood velas and fruit-throwing regadas through summer
  • Shop for huipiles and gold jewellery in the market
  • Spend weekends at Salina Cruz beaches or the Laollaga springs
  • Eat garnachas on the zócalo in the evening

What to eat in Tehuantepec

  • Tamales de elote: Sweet fresh-corn tamales sold in the market and at street stalls.
  • Molotes: Fried masa croquettes with a savoury filling, a common breakfast and evening snack.
  • Isthmus moles (including chichilo): Tehuantepec kitchens cook several moles - negro, rojo, amarillo, coloradito and the less-known chichilo - for fiestas and family lunches.
  • Bupu: A foamy pre-Hispanic cacao and corn drink served cold in the evening.

When to go and what is on

It is hot and humid all year, with most rain between June and September. November to February brings the strong northerly winds the Isthmus is known for, while May is very hot but full of velas, including the Vela Sandunga.

Festivals worth planning around

  • Vela Sandunga (End of May): The town's most important vela: a week of events with a festival queen, a parade of traditional dress and a closing procession for Santo Domingo, the town's patron saint.
  • Neighbourhood velas and regadas (Mainly summer (for example Santa María Reoloteca, 13-18 August)): Each barrio honours its patron saint with a candle procession, flower offerings, parades where fruit is thrown to the crowd and all-night dances.
  • Vela Tehuantepec (26 December): A December vela held in town, one of several outside the main summer season.
