Things to do in Juchitán: Zapotec pride, all-night velas and Isthmus winds

Juchitán is the cultural heart of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a hot, flat, wind-swept strip between two oceans where Zapotec is still spoken in the market and women in embroidered huipiles run much of the trade.

Why visit Juchitán

Juchitán is the cultural heart of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a hot, flat, wind-swept strip between two oceans where Zapotec is still spoken in the market and women in embroidered huipiles run much of the trade. The town is famous across Mexico for its velas - all-night neighbourhood fiestas with brass bands, flowers and gold-coin necklaces - and for its long-standing acceptance of muxes, a third gender in Zapotec culture.

Foreign travellers usually rush past on the bus between Oaxaca and Chiapas, and guidebooks give it a paragraph. That is exactly why it rewards a stop: you get one of Mexico's largest Indigenous markets, a cultural centre founded by the painter Francisco Toledo, and Isthmus cooking you will not find anywhere else - without tour groups.

Top things to do in Juchitán

The experiences travellers and locals rate most, all easy to reach once you step off the bus.

Lidxi Guendabiaani (Casa de la Cultura)

Founded in 1972 by painter Francisco Toledo and local residents, it was the first house of culture in an Indigenous community in Mexico. It holds modern art, archaeological and ethnographic rooms and a library around a courtyard, and reopened after post-earthquake restoration.

Laguna Superior and the Juchitán beaches

South of town, the Laguna Superior is a large coastal lagoon fringed by fishing villages and beaches such as Playa San Vicente and Playa Unión. Locals head to nearby Santa María Xadani on the lagoon shore for seafood lunches.

Evening garnachas near the market

When the heat drops, stalls around the market and the plaza fry garnachas - small masa discs topped with shredded meat, salsa and pickled cabbage. Forum regulars recommend wandering the market early and eating garnachas after dark.

Do it like a local

What Mexican travellers do in Juchitán, from forums, local guides and people who live there.

  • Dress up and dance all night at May velas
  • Shop for gold-thread huipiles and enaguas for fiestas
  • Drive to the lagoon villages for seafood on weekends
  • Meet friends for garnachas around the plaza after dark

What to eat in Juchitán

  • Garnachas istmeñas: Small fried corn tortillas topped with shredded beef, tomato salsa, crumbled cheese and pickled cabbage - the Isthmus' signature snack.
  • Totopos: Crisp, dimpled corn discs baked against the walls of clay ovens, eaten with seafood, cheese or pico de gallo.
  • Bupu: A Zapotec drink of corn and cacao topped with a thick foam flavoured with frangipani flowers (guiechachi), mostly drunk in the evening.
  • Estofado istmeño: A slightly sweet, fruity meat stew cooked for velas and weddings.

When to go and what is on

Juchitán is hot all year (average highs above 30 °C) with rain mainly from June to September. Strong northerly winds peak from December to January and can exceed 100 km/h, while May is calmer, hotter and the height of vela season.

Festivals worth planning around

  • Velas de Mayo (San Vicente Ferrer) (May (velas season runs roughly April - September)): A series of all-night fiestas for the patron saint San Vicente Ferrer, with a large procession, regadas (parades where fruit and gifts are thrown to the crowd) and women in full tehuana dress.
  • Vela de las Auténticas Intrépidas Buscadoras del Peligro (November (mid-month)): The muxe community's own vela, held every November since the 1970s, with a mass, procession, pageant and the crowning of a muxe queen; it draws thousands of visitors.
