The journey from Chiquilá to Valladolid
This corridor links Valladolid with Chiquilá, the small fishing port on the Yalahau lagoon where ferries leave for Isla Holbox. From Valladolid the route heads east into Quintana Roo, then turns north on the state road (QROO 5) through Kantunilkín, the municipal seat, before ending at the water's edge in Chiquilá. The last stretch runs through quiet farmland, savanna and mangrove country with few settlements.
Chiquilá itself is little more than the ferry docks, parking lots and a few eateries. Buses stop close to the piers, so arriving passengers can walk straight to the ferry, and travellers coming off the island can step from the boat to the bus.

- Afternoon (12:00–17:59): about 1 a day

Coming back from Holbox, Valladolid is the natural first stop inland: a colonial town with cenotes such as Zací, X'keken, Samula and Suytun, the Convent of San Bernardino, and easy access to Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá. It also has good onward bus links to Mérida and the Riviera Maya.
Tips for the Chiquilá–Valladolid bus
Tip 1
Buy the ferry ticket at the Chiquilá pier; ferries run roughly every half hour in daytime, but check the last crossing before you travel.
Tip 2
Bring cash to Holbox; ATMs on the island can run out, and many shops add a card surcharge.
Tip 3
Pack light: the island has sandy streets and no regular cars, so you will walk or use golf-cart taxis to your hotel.
Tip 4
If no departure suits your plans, an alternative is to go via Tizimín and change there.
Other ways to travel
The Tren Maya does not serve Chiquilá, and there are no scheduled flights to Holbox, only charter air taxis; private shuttles and driving via Kantunilkín are the main options. The ADO bus is the simplest public link, dropping passengers near the ferry piers.
