Travelling by bus in Yucatán & Campeche

The states of Yucatán and Campeche cover the western and central Yucatán Peninsula: the colonial cities of Mérida, Valladolid and Campeche, the Maya sites of Chichén Itzá and Calakmul, and the Gulf coast port of Ciudad del Carmen. Distances are long and many of the highlights are inland, away from the Caribbean beaches.

Buses tie the region together. Mérida and Valladolid are the main hubs for Chichén Itzá and the Caribbean coast, Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen link the peninsula with Tabasco and central Mexico, and Xpujil is the base for visiting the Calakmul jungle reserve. Knowing which terminal to use, and that some stops are very basic, makes planning much easier.

How ADO serves Yucatán & Campeche

ADO serves all three peninsula states, including Mérida, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá and Campeche. In Mérida the central TAME terminal handles first-class ADO, ADO Connect, ADO GL and ADO Platino buses as well as second-class OCC, Mayab, ATS, Oriente and TRT services, while the Paseo 60 terminal in the hotel district focuses on premium services and direct buses to Cancún Airport. Valladolid has frequent first-class ADO buses to Cancún, Mérida and Playa del Carmen, and second-class lines serve the villages around Chichén Itzá. In Campeche, ADO connects the capital, Ciudad del Carmen and Xpujil with Mérida, Cancún, Chetumal, Villahermosa and Mexico City.

Main ADO terminals in Yucatán & Campeche

The terminals most travellers use, with directions, facilities and the routes that leave from each.

Merida Unica Bus Station (CAME / TAME (Terminal de Autobuses de Mérida))

Address: Calle 69 554, 97070, Mérida
Coordinates: 20.96253, -89.63030
ADO lines: ADO, ADO GL, ADO Platino
Departures: about 308 ADO connections a day to 45 cities

Mérida's main central bus terminal for first-class travel. For years the first-class CAME terminal on Calle 70 (between Calles 69 and 71) was the main hub, but in November 2019 ADO opened the rebuilt TAME terminal next door on Calle 69 (between Calles 68 and 70) to bring services together. Some booking sites still use the CAME name. Buses run to Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Campeche, Chetumal and beyond.

Getting there: The terminal is in the historic centre a few blocks southwest of the Plaza Grande, so many centro hotels are within walking distance or a short taxi ride. Most Mérida taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare before you get in.

Facilities: First-class (ADO, ADO Connect, ADO GL, ADO Platino) and second-class (OCC, Mayab, ATS, Oriente, TRT) brands sell tickets in the same terminal.

Tip: Mérida has several ADO terminals, including Paseo 60, Altabrisa and Periférico, so check which one is on your ticket. Colectivos to Valladolid leave from a separate stand on Calle 32, not from the bus terminal.

Departures: about 21 ADO connections a day to 8 cities

ADO's terminal in Mérida's northern hotel district, which opened in January 2019 a block and a half from the old Fiesta Americana bus stop it replaced. It mainly handles premium ADO Platino and ADO GL services, including direct buses to Cancún and Cancún Airport, plus long-distance routes towards Tabasco, Oaxaca and Veracruz.

Getting there: The terminal is behind the Hyatt Regency at Calle 60 and Calle 35, north of the historic centre near Paseo de Montejo and the big hotels. It is easiest to reach by taxi from the centro.

Facilities: The terminal is connected to the Paseo 60 complex, which has restaurants, shops and an hour of free parking. Turibus and an airport taxi service also operate from here.

Tip: This is a handy option if you are staying near Paseo de Montejo or catching an early bus to Cancún Airport. Check your ticket, because some services leave only from the central terminal.

The ADO stop for the Chichén Itzá archaeological site, one of Mexico's most visited Maya ruins. Getting there: Pisté, with budget hotels and restaurants, is about 2.5 to 3 km west of the ruins. Colectivo vans run between the site and Valladolid about every half hour and stop at Cenote Ik Kil.

Facilities: The main west entrance has a visitor centre with a museum, restaurant, ATM and shops.

Tip: Arrive at opening time, because tour coaches from Cancún and Mérida start arriving around 10:30. Departures from the site are far fewer than from city terminals, so check or book your onward bus before you set off.

Getting there: The terminal is outside the walled historic centre. Taxis charge by zone, and Wikivoyage put the fare to downtown at about M$30. Local buses cost about M$6, but they are cramped and drivers may not change large notes.

Facilities: Wikivoyage describes a small terminal with no air conditioning, a paid restroom and often understaffed ticket counters.

Tip: Buy tickets online or in the ADO app to avoid long queues at the counter. On the Ciudad del Carmen route, first-class buses are faster than second-class ones.

A small terminal on Highway 186 in Xpujil, the village that is the base for the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and its Maya ruins. First- and second-class buses heading for Chetumal and Escárcega stop here, and second-class buses run to and from Campeche city.

Getting there: The terminal is on the main highway in the village, and Hotel Nicte-Ha is right across the street. Calakmul is far from town: day trips cost about M$350 to M$400 per person (2023, excluding park and road fees) and leave around 08:00. The Tren Maya station is about 4 km north of town.

Facilities: A basic terminal with poor restrooms, though the ADO buses themselves are clean and modern.

Tip: Arrange your Calakmul transport the day before, as there is no public transport to the ruins; drivers often approach travellers at the bus station. Carry cash for park and road fees, which are paid separately.

Tips for bus travel in Yucatán & Campeche

Tip 1

Mérida has several ADO terminals (central TAME/CAME, Paseo 60, Altabrisa and more), so check the departure terminal on your ticket.

Tip 2

For Chichén Itzá, a first-class ADO bus or a Valladolid colectivo is the easiest way in. Get there early to beat the heat and the tour coaches.

Tip 3

Many taxis on the peninsula have no meter, so agree the fare before getting in.

Tip 4

In Campeche and Xpujil terminals are small and basic, so buy tickets online and carry cash for colectivos and park fees.
