Travelling by bus in Puebla & Tlaxcala

Puebla, with its tiled colonial centre and famous food, is one of the busiest bus destinations from Mexico City, and small Tlaxcala is right next door. Beyond the capitals, Tehuacán in the south and Teziutlán in the northern highlands are regional towns with their own ADO stations.

Puebla city has more than one terminal. The big CAPU handles most routes, the premium Paseo Destino in the Angelópolis area focuses on airport and executive services, and a newer southern terminal opened in 2024. Knowing which one your ticket uses avoids a costly cross-town taxi.

How ADO serves Puebla & Tlaxcala

ADO's first route, in 1939, ran from Mexico City to Veracruz via Puebla, and the Mexico City–Puebla corridor is still one of its busiest. At CAPU, ADO, ADO Platino, AU and OCC share the terminal with other lines. The premium Paseo Destino terminal handles ADO and airport-focused services to AICM and points in Mexico City. In the rest of the region, ADO and AU link Tehuacán with Puebla and Mexico City, ADO serves Teziutlán, and ADO is one of several lines at Tlaxcala's central bus station.

Main ADO terminals in Puebla & Tlaxcala

The terminals most travellers use, with directions, facilities and the routes that leave from each.

Puebla Central Bus Station (CAPU)

Address: Blvd. Norte 4222, 72080, Puebla
Coordinates: 19.07533, -98.20600
ADO lines: ADO, ADO GL, ADO OCC, ADO Platino, AU
Departures: about 599 ADO connections a day to 78 cities

The Central de Autobuses de Puebla opened in 1988 on Boulevard Norte and is the busiest terminal in the state. More than 20 lines, including ADO, ADO Platino, AU, OCC and Estrella Roja, run from here to Mexico City, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Chiapas, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo and further afield.

Getting there: Authorised taxis (taxis autorizados) are sold at kiosks inside the terminal at regulated prices. For a city bus, cross the footbridge over Boulevard Norte; Wikivoyage suggests route 44 towards the centre, getting off at Av. 10 Oriente and walking the last few blocks to the zócalo. Moovit is more reliable than Google Maps for Puebla's city buses.

Facilities: There are many ticket counters, an ATM, local bus stops and taxi ranks at the main entrance.

Tip: At night, buy a prepaid taxi ticket at an authorised booth rather than taking a cab outside. Keep an eye on bags on crowded city buses.

Paseo Destino, at Boulevard Las Torres 1923 in the Reserva Territorial Atlixcáyotl (Angelópolis), is a premium terminal ('terrapuerto') combined with a shopping plaza. It handles mainly executive and airport services, with ADO and Estrella Roja group brands running to Mexico City airport (AICM), several points in Mexico City, and long-distance routes such as Veracruz and Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

Getting there: It sits on the south-west side of the city, towards Cholula and the Atlixcáyotl area, not near the historic centre. Authorised taxis operate from the terminal, and rideshare apps are the other easy option.

Facilities: As part of a shopping complex, it has shops and food outlets close at hand.

Tip: Paseo Destino is not CAPU. Check which terminal your ticket names and ask taxi drivers for 'Paseo Destino' by name.

Tips for bus travel in Puebla & Tlaxcala

Tip 1

Check whether your Puebla ticket is for CAPU, Paseo Destino or the newer CAPU Sur. They are far apart.

Tip 2

Use the authorised taxi kiosks at CAPU and Paseo Destino, especially after dark.

Tip 3

From Mexico City, TAPO has the most frequent ADO departures to Puebla. Paseo Destino is handy for direct links to AICM airport.

Tip 4

Tlaxcala is easy as a side trip from Puebla on frequent local buses, but premium ADO services there are limited.
