Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico

Travelling by bus in Chiapas

Chiapas is Mexico's southernmost state, on the border with Guatemala. Visitors come for the highland town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, the Maya ruins of Palenque, the Sumidero Canyon near Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the Montebello lakes near Comitán and the Pacific lowlands around Tapachula.

Distances are long and the roads climb steeply between jungle lowlands and highlands over 2,000 m, so buses are the main way to get around. Most intercity routes pass through Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and terminals in Tapachula, Comitán and San Cristóbal are also gateways to Guatemala.

How ADO serves Chiapas

In Chiapas, Grupo ADO operates mainly through its OCC brand, alongside ADO, ADO GL and the second-class brands Rápidos del Sur, AU and Cristóbal Colón. OCC and ADO GL run frequent services between Tuxtla Gutiérrez and San Cristóbal, ADO Aeropuerto buses link Tuxtla's airport with the city and San Cristóbal, and ADO buses reach Palenque, Villahermosa, Mérida, Cancún, Oaxaca and Mexico City. Unlike most Mexican cities, Chiapas towns often have separate stations for each bus company.

Coordinates: 16.76160, -93.13860
ADO lines: ADO, ADO Aeropuerto (R), ADO GL, AU
Departures: about 141 ADO connections a day to 30 cities

Tip: Many second-class buses and vans from San Cristóbal use the separate Terminal de Transferencia instead, so check where your service arrives. If you have a flight to catch, ask in advance about blockades on the Tuxtla–San Cristóbal highway.

Tips for bus travel in Chiapas

Tip 1

Protest blockades are common on Chiapas highways, especially between Tuxtla and San Cristóbal and on Highway 199 near Ocosingo on the way to Palenque. Ask at the terminal or your hotel on the day you travel.

Tip 2

The road from San Cristóbal to Palenque is long, winding and mountainous. Some ADO services avoid it by going via Tuxtla and Villahermosa, so compare routes and take motion-sickness tablets if needed.

Tip 3

Many Chiapas bus companies have their own separate stations. Confirm the exact terminal on your ticket, especially in Tapachula and Tuxtla.

Tip 4

If you are crossing into Guatemala at Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Talismán or Ciudad Hidalgo, carry your passport and travel early in the day so you reach the border while offices are open.
