Would you like to travel to Chichén Itzá from Cancun?
Travel with us and enjoy the following benefits:

Chichen Itzá is ready to welcome you
Direct Sunday service from Cancún's downtown ADO Centro terminal all the way to the Parador Turístico at the West Entrance of Chichén Itzá—bringing you right next to the ticket booth of one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. No rental car, no transfers in Valladolid, no guided-tour schedule: you arrive, you explore at your own pace, and the return bus takes you back to Cancún the same evening. Approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes each way.
Discover the Ancient Mayan Heritage
Twice a year, on the spring and fall equinoxes, the setting sun casts a shadow down the staircase of El Castillo that slithers into the shape of a descending serpent — the Maya's feathered god Kukulkán, engineered into the pyramid's stone more than a thousand years ago. Thousands gather to watch. It's one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, a UNESCO World Heritage site — and only Chichén Itzá has it.
Useful information for your trip
Frequently Asked Questions
One-way tickets start at around MXN $496 (approximately $26 USD), with prices varying slightly by season and how far in advance you book. This is ADO's direct tourist service straight to the site — significantly cheaper than a private driver or organized group tour, and more flexible too.
How long is the bus from Cancún to Chichén Itzá?
The direct trip takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes, dropping you right at the Parador Turístico at the West Entrance of the archaeological zone. The route runs inland via Federal Highway 180D through the Yucatán heartland. Note: Chichén Itzá is in the state of Yucatán, which runs one hour behind Quintana Roo (Cancún) — factor this in when planning your day.
What time do buses from Cancún to Chichén Itzá leave?
ADO's direct tourist service to the Chichén Itzá Parador runs on Sundays, with a morning departure timed so you arrive before the midday heat and the biggest tour-bus crowds. A return bus leaves Chichén Itzá in the late afternoon, giving you several hours to explore the site. Always confirm the exact departure time and day on the ADO website or at the ticket window before your trip, as schedules can change seasonally.
Which terminal does the bus leave from in Cancún?
The departure point is Terminal ADO Cancún Centro, located downtown on Avenida Tulum at Avenida Uxmal — a short taxi or ride-hailing trip from the Hotel Zone and about 20 minutes from Cancún International Airport. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure to check in and find your platform.
Where does the bus arrive at Chichén Itzá?
The bus drops you at the Parador Turístico at the West Entrance of the Chichén Itzá archaeological zone — steps from the ticket booths, visitor center, restaurants, and shops. No taxis, colectivos, or connections needed. From there, it's a short walk to El Castillo, the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, and the Sacred Cenote.
Can I cancel or change my ADO bus ticket?
You can cancel your ticket up to 60 minutes before departure at any ADO ticket office. You must present the original ticket and an official ID matching the ticketholder's name. Refunds are issued as Saldo Max credit, not back to your original payment method. Advance-purchase discounted tickets are more restrictive and generally non-refundable. If you don't know your new date, you can request an open ticket for the same route to rebook later.
Is there a flexible ticket option?
ADO's standard full-price tickets allow exchanges up to 60 minutes before departure at any ticket window. Discounted advance-purchase tickets are typically non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
Does the bus make stops along the way?
The Sunday tourist service is designed as a direct route from Cancún to the Chichén Itzá Parador, with minimal stops. Other ADO services on the corridor may stop in Valladolid, requiring a connection or colectivo to reach the ruins — which is why the direct Parador service is the smoothest way to visit the site in a single day.
How much luggage can I bring?
Each passenger can take up to 25 kg of checked baggage free of charge with ADO. Your bags are stored in a locked compartment under the bus with a claim tag. You can also carry one small carry-on at no additional cost. For a day trip to the ruins, a small backpack with water, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera is all you really need.
What does the ADO service to Chichén Itzá include?
ADO's tourist service features reclining seats, air conditioning, onboard restroom, onboard entertainment, Wi-Fi (signal availability varies along the highway), and electrical outlets. It's designed as a comfortable round-trip experience for travelers heading to one of Mexico's most visited archaeological sites — bring a light sweater, as the A/C runs cool.
Can I book my ticket in English?
Yes! At ADO International, we offer the ADO booking experience in many different languages, adapting to the needs of travelers, visitors, and different passengers from all over the world. Digital boarding passes are sent by email — no need to print.
Do I need an ID to board?
Yes. Carry a valid government-issued photo ID (passport for international travelers, INE for Mexican citizens) that matches the name on your ticket. While ID checks aren't always enforced on domestic routes, it's required for cancellations, exchanges, and occasionally at boarding.
Is the Cancún to Chichén Itzá bus safe?
ADO operates modern buses equipped with GPS tracking, professional certified drivers, and safety features including seatbelts on premium services. Highway 180D is a modern toll road, well-patrolled, and regularly traveled by tourist and intercity services. Routine police or military checkpoints are common on the Yucatán corridor — just keep your ID handy. ADO is consistently rated as one of the safest bus operators in Mexico.
Can I travel with children?
Children under 5 years old travel free if sharing a seat with an accompanying adult. Children over 5 require their own ticket. Unaccompanied minors under 18 are generally not permitted without an authorized adult. Chichén Itzá is a fantastic family day trip — kids often love the echo at the base of El Castillo (clap once, and the pyramid returns the sound of a quetzal bird).
